How to Remember to Drink Water

Do you sometimes look back on your day and realise you didn’t drink enough water? Me too, so here are a few tips on how to remember to drink water.

So why should you drink more water? Well, you need it. And a lot more than you might think. It is also the solution to an endless number of things. Dry skin? Drink more water! Dry hair? Drink more water! Chapped lips? Drink more water! It also helps maintain normal bowel functions, energizes muscles, and helps your kidneys.

Make it part of your daily routine.

If you’ve already got a successful morning routine, simply make drinking a glass or two of water a part of it. To give an example, I have a large bottle of water and a glass on my bedside table. This makes it easy for me to start the day with one or two glasses of water.

Keep it close.

If you have to make an effort to get to water, we often forget it or dismiss it. Try to always have easy access to water. Have a bottle on your desk, one on your nightstand, one in your bag, and one in your car. If it’s within your sight (and your reach), you are more likely to remember to drink it.

Drink before you eat.

A good way to remember to drink water (and eat less food) is to start every meal with a glass of water. Sometimes your brain interprets thirst as hunger and this will help you determine if you really are hungry.

Count your drinks.

I use an app to help me remember to drink. You can get all sorts of apps for these kinds of things. I use LifeSum as I’m already using it to keep track of my meals. Some say to drink  8 glasses a day, but the benefits of this specific amount has not been scientifically proven. I usually end up with 6-7 glasses of water a day.

Flavour it up.

If you find the taste of ordinary water unappealing and bland, try to mix it up with some squash. There are many types of sugar-free, organic squashes on the market for you to choose from. You can also simply add some lemon to your glass of water.

Make it a game.

Challenge yourself! See how early in the day you can finish your daily water intake. Or see how much water you can drink before dinnertime. Just remember that it’s best to spread you drinks out through the day.

Set an alarm. 

Set a few alarms throughout the day that tell you to drink water. If you are likely to forget to drink, this can be a great way to help yourself remember. Then maybe after a time you won’t need the alarms anymore.

Drinking more water can literally change your life for the better. When you’re properly hydrated, you can digest easier, sleep better, and think clearer. I’ve learned to love water and it’s endless benefits. Maybe you can too?
